Assessment

Your assessment will be conducted and written in accordance with the Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLD) Working Group 2005/DfES Guidelines for Assessment of SpLDs in Higher Education.

Your assessor holds a current Assessment Practising Certificate issued by The Professional Association of Teachers of Students with Specific Learning Difficulties (PATOSS) and is a specialist teacher holding an approved qualification (as noted in the SpLD Working Group 2005/DfES Guidelines) with RSA Diploma in Specific Learning Difficulties (see individual profiles for further information) and is therefore able to provide evidence to allow JCQ to approve Access Arrangements such as extra time or use of laptops/scribe/reader in public examinations.

Your assessment will provide a profile of cognitive abilities with measurements of skills and approaches to information processing. It will help you to develop a clearer understanding of how you approach study tasks and how your memory can support you, or may let you down. A full report provides recommendations and makes suggestions for effective study strategies. Advice is also provided on applying for the Disabled Students Allowance DSA), which is a grant for full and part-time, FE and HE students, including students on distance learning courses such as some of those offered by the Open University. Where necessary, the grant may help with the purchase of specialist equipment and tuition.

Tuition & support

The tuition/support we offer is with a specialist tutor holding qualifications recognised by the providers of the DSA. She is experienced in supporting students with dyslexia and has been a university tutor for undergraduate and postgraduate courses for the past twenty years. This experience provides insight into criteria for successful assignments and examinations. The tuition is intended to help a student take control of his/her own learning by developing effective study strategies that improve confidence and reduce stress. The sessions focus on your specific needs based on the course and assignments and can include analysing learning objectives and assignment criteria, research skills, note-taking, planning and outlining essays, managing dissertations, proof reading, referencing, time management and exam and revision strategies. Students that have benefited from tuition in the past include those on Art and Design courses, Business and Finance, Law, Media Studies, Social Work, Youth Work, Environment, Geography, Nursing and Medicine.
